Lettuce

DIG THIS!   about Lettuce:

Ancient Greeks believed that lettuce induced sleep so it was served at the end of meals.  Of course, Roman Emperor Domitan knew this fact also, but he chose to serve it at the beginning of the meals and feasts so this way he could torture his guests by making them stay awake in his presence.

Superstition says that lettuce has magical and healing powers.  It is said to arouse love and counteract the effects of too much wine.  Lettuce is a member of the sunflower family.  Darker leaved varieties aer more nutritious than lighter colored.  Thomas Jefferson grew 19 varieties of lettuce at his home garden in Montecello.  Lettuce cannot be preserved by any method and is only eaten fresh.
