Pumpkins
« Dig This! |DIG THIS! about Pumpkins:
A pumpkin is 90% water! Antarctica is the only continent that can’t grow pumpkins. The Irish were the first to carve pumpkins. Traditionally, they carved turnips in their homeland, but once they arrived in the U.S., pumpkins were plentiful and much easier to carve. The reason they carved them? Because of the Legend of Stingy Jack! It was said that Stingy Jack messed with the devil and the “Jack-o-Lantern” (lit by burning embers) kept Stingy Jack and other evil spirits away.
About 80% of the U.S. pumpkin supply is available in the month of October.
